In April and again in October 2024, Israeli Air Force jets – including the advanced F-351 – flew more than 2,000 kilometres into Iranian airspace and struck more than two dozen targets, including Iran’s Russian-made S-300 surface-to-air missile systems. These systems had been considered the primary deterrent to an Israeli airstrike and their destruction has now rendered Iran’s airspace wide open.

Given that Iran has for decades been working on the establishment of a nuclear program – with plenty of evidence that this was not for peaceful purposes – and that its nuclear facilities have been buried deep underground in mountainous areas to protect the sites from air attack, there was only so much the Israelis could do.

Enter U.S. President Donald Trump. On 22 June 2025 the U.S. Air Force and Navy, on his orders, attacked three nuclear facilities under the code name Operation Midnight Hammer. The Fordow Uranium Enrichment Plant, the Natanz Nuclear Facility and the Isfahan Nuclear Technology Centre were targeted with fourteen Guided Bomb Unit Massive Ordnance Penetrator 14,000 kg so-called ‘bunker-buster’ bombs carried by Northrop B-2 Spirit stealth bombers. Around the same time, Tomahawk missiles were fired from a U.S. submarine.

Whether the underground facilities were completely destroyed remains to be verified but at the very least, it has been a major setback for Iran’s nuclear aspirations.

So, you would expect that this development would be met by unbridled joy around the world, wouldn’t you? After all, under the regime headed by Ayatollah Ali Hosseini Khamenei, Iran could be described as Terrorist Central, supplying and funding terrorists throughout the world. According to the U.S. State Department, Iran is a designated State Sponsor of Terrorism and it has been since 1984 through various U.S. administrations. It continues its support for Hezbollah in Lebanon, Hamas and other terrorist groups in Gaza and various militant groups in Iraq, Syria, Bahrain and elsewhere throughout the Middle East.

This evil empire not only spreads its tentacles around the world, it terrorises its own citizens. According to Human Rights Watch, the regime continues to carry out a horrific execution spree, with at least 113 reported executions in the first 25 days of May 2025 alone. According to Oslo-based NGO, Iran Human Rights, as of 27 May 2025, Iranian authorities had executed 487 of its own citizens; it reported a 75% increase in executions in the first four months of 2025, compared with the same period in 2024. If this rate continues, it is likely that over 1,000 people, including ethnic minorities, political dissidents and individuals accused – rightly or wrongly -- of drug-related offences will be executed by year’s end. Reported figures also show an escalation in the use of the death penalty against women and a disproportionate impact on marginalised communities, including oppressed ethnic minorities.

Some of the charges levelled against these victims are such vaguely worded allegations as “armed rebellion”, “enmity against God” and “corruption on earth”. There is a report that two recent political prisoners were sentenced after a trial that lasted only several minutes. Most of these trials take place behind closed doors with no chosen lawyer for the defendant.

Marziyeh Amirizadeh (known as Marzi in the West) was a death row inmate in Iran’s notorious Evin Prison (the gates of which were blown off by an Israeli bomb – more about that later) until, following international pressure, the authorities released her on 18 November 2009. Following the Israeli Air Force’s raids on Iran this year, she wrote a letter of gratitude to the IAF pilots and crew following their achievements in Iran. I believe this letter is of such import, it should be restated here in full:

My dear Israeli brothers and sisters,

I am an Iranian woman who knows the evil nature of the Islamic Republic Regime in Iran, the enemy you fight while sacrificing your life to protect your homeland and people. Like you, I have endured the brutality of this regime. In 2009, I was imprisoned for nearly nine months solely for my faith in Jesus (and) sentenced to death by hanging. I witnessed the execution of my cellmates and best friend, as well as the torture and abuse of countless innocent women. The regime killed my husband and destroyed my father’s life. I endured immense pain, trauma and suffering because of these radical Islamists in my homeland.

Millions of Iranians have faced unimaginable brutality. We share a common enemy. I also understand the suffering your people have endured due to the Islamic Republic and its terrorist proxies, who seek the destruction of your country and the extermination of your people.

I have felt ashamed my entire life because of these demonic rulers who share my language. Often, I hesitate to admit I am Iranian because of their actions. Please know that Iranians are not the Islamic Republic. Millions, like me, have been oppressed and held hostage by the ayatollahs and their terrorist organizations in Iran and beyond. Like many Iranians, I have never harbored hatred towards you. Our cultures share similarities – kindness, hospitality and a love for life.

I have visited your beautiful country, which has connected me to your rich culture and faith, the foundation of my own. Each visit to Israel felt like coming home, welcomed warmly by your people – experiences I will cherish forever.

Yet, I feel the deep shame for the pain the Islamic Republic has inflicted upon you. As I write, tears fill my eyes because of the demonic rulers of my country. I feel compelled to apologize on behalf of my people for the suffering, hatred and loss you have endured., I am sorry for the loved ones you have lost, the families torn apart and the wars you have been forced to fight. I apologize for the hostages taken, the trauma endured by Israeli children, the hatred directed at you by the ayatollahs and their followers, and the missiles launched from my country that have destroyed your homes. I am sorry for decades of animosity between our nations.

Jews and Persians share a great history. Persian kings, such as Cyrus and Darius, respected and supported you, God’s chosen people. Yet, figures like Haman and the ayatollahs have sought to divide us. Yet, the God of Israel has consistently defended His people, proving His faithfulness.

I must thank you. Thank you for understanding that Iranians are not the Islamic Republic. Thank you for risking your lives to fight for our shared enemy, helping Iranians reclaim their freedom. Thank you for eliminating IRGC leaders, nuclear facilities and military bases, bringing joy to millions of Iranians. Thank you for amplifying our cries for freedom and for your courage in confronting this barbaric enemy.

I am especially grateful for your role in attacking Evin Prison, where I was imprisoned and my best friend, Shirin Alamhooli was tortured and executed. Her body, like those of many political prisoners, was never returned despite my begging outside the infamous gate that you destroyed. I pray for the survival and escape of those still imprisoned and for the destruction of that dark, wicked place after the regime’s fall.

You are God’s army, bringing justice against Iran’s evil rulers, as foretold in Jeremiah 49:38-39, which promises judgment on Elam (modern Iran) and the restoration of its people. Your courage is fulfilling this divine promise.

It is an honor to call you my brothers and sisters. I pray that soon, Persians and Jews will restore our friendship, celebrating together over the defeat of our mutual enemies. May the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob bless and protect you, granting wisdom and victory in every battle. I hope one day, the lions of Judah and Persia will stand united, that our nations become close allies and that Iranians rise to reclaim their dignity and freedom, never again allowing evil to hijack our country,

I love and admire your bravery on behalf of my people. I will keep you and your nation in my prayers until we celebrate victory together.

Sincerely,

Marziyeh Amirizadeh

Marzi went on to say in her article in Israel365News that the successful strike on Evin Prison brought her back to many hours of masked interrogations, pressure to deny her faith and the trauma and suffering she experienced and witnessed all around her. She said that looking at the picture of where the Israeli missiles hit, behind the gate is near building 209, nowhere near the prison cells. She said there is no way that inmates were attacked because the area hit is one used by the interrogators and administrators. She went on that it was no surprise that the regime lied about this to gain world condemnation of Israel (e.g. read how the BBC, The Guardian et. al. reported the strike). She said that the regime will no doubt exploit the strike by executing more prisoners to avoid international pressure and blame Israel, claiming they were killed as a result of the strike.

There is footage of the IAF strikes showing one of them hitting the entrance gate. According to the Jerusalem Post, the strike was deliberately targeted at that gate so as to avoid hitting the inmate housing.

Evin Prison holds many Iranian political prisoners and is where many of the anti-regime protesters are sent following arrest. Its infamy is due to allegations of torture and sexual abuse perpetrated by prison guards, with many of the 2009 protesters in Iran directly accusing prison officials of raping male and female prisoners.

Rape has featured prominently in the Islamic Republic’s prisons dating back to the 1980s, with anti-regime protesters describing it as routine. The Islamic Republic’s theological view is that rape victims cannot enter Heaven.

So, given Iran’s dark history since it fell into the hands of the ayatollahs and the countless testimonies, such as that of Marzi Amirizadeh, what are the flag-waving, chanting protest-marchers, many of them college students whose minds have been poisoned by leftist – even Marxist -- academics, on about? They claim that the U.S. and Israel are attacking the Iranian people when they are doing no such thing. What, in effect, they are actually supporting is a regime that terrorises its own people, executing them for vacuous reasons – such, in Marzi’s case, for simply being a Christian – hanging gays from cranes in public places (which adds a touch of irony to those protesters who are gay). And there are numerous instances of Iranian civilians themselves (like Marzi) praising the attacks, even celebrating with champagne toasts. It is worth remembering that surveys have shown that over 80% of Iranians (and 90% of those living outside Iran) despise the regime and support U.S. and Israeli military action.

Ingrid Jacques, columnist for USA Today, had this to say in her piece on 25 June: “I would rather think these protesters are cheering for terrorists out of ignorance or stupidity than that they honestly side with the religious extremists who exert full control over the Iranian people. But it’s hard to tell.”

I’m going with stupidity.

Yaakov Katz, writing in the Jerusalem Post on 13 June 2025, opined that there is little question that Israel was right to strike Iran’s nuclear facilities, taking advantage of a unique window of opportunity that stemmed from three primary factors:

§ The degradation of Iran’s regional proxies.

§ Operational capability.

§ The change in Washington.

A disturbing article dated 22 February 2022 by Peter Brookes, former Senior Research Fellow, Center for National Defense and James Phillips, former Visiting Fellow, Allison Center (both in the U.S.) highlighted the danger Iran’s regime was, at that time (and, of course still is) not only to the Middle East but to the world. They reported that Tehran had the largest ballistic missile arsenal in the Middle East and that its so-called civilian space program, which could support the building of intercontinental-range military missiles capable of reaching the U.S., was very active. The article also confirmed that Iran is still the world’s foremost state sponsor of terrorism, that its Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) which controls key parts of the nuclear program, also coordinates Iran’s terrorist network, working closely with Hezbollah, Hamas, radical Iraqi militias, Yemen’s Houthi rebels and Syria’s Bashar Assad regime (as it then was) another state sponsor of terrorism.

Brooks and Phillips concluded their article thus: Considering the regime’s ambitions and behavior, preventing Iran from getting a nuclear weapon is a national security imperative. Team Biden’s failure to seize this historic opportunity to diplomatically redress the shortcomings of the original deal (JCPOA – Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action – the brainchild of former president Obama) could make a nuclear Iran inevitable.

Fortunately, a U.S. president came along to seize a slightly different – but more effective – opportunity.
